FRSC, Dangote collaborate to reduce road crashes
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has collaborated with Dangote Cement Transport to tackle the rising rate of crashes involving articulated vehicles, particularly trucks linked to the Dangote Group.
The collaboration was formalised during a high-level meeting at the FRSC Headquarters in Abuja, where both parties agreed on concrete steps to strengthen transport safety policies and reduce accidents involving Dangote’s fleet.
In a statement signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, and released today, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the initiative as a timely response to public concern over frequent crashes involving Dangote truck.
“This engagement is more than a response to recent incidents. It is a proactive step to ensure that lives are saved, confidence is restored, and the Nigerian motoring public is assured of safer highways,” Mohammed said.
“The FRSC and Dangote Cement Transport share a common responsibility, and together we must drive down crash statistics by investing in training, compliance, and innovation.”
Dangote Cement Transport was represented at the meeting by Murillo Silva, who joined FRSC officials to discuss long-term solutions to improve road safety in the company’s logistics operations.
Key areas of focus include the development of structured training and retraining programmes for Dangote truck drivers in line with the National Skills Qualification Framework, strict enforcement of regular vehicle maintenance schedules, and the installation of critical safety devices to prevent mechanical failures. The meeting also proposed joint safety initiatives that could serve as a model for other fleet operators across the country.
Beyond this partnership, FRSC has intensified nationwide efforts to promote road safety through enhanced driver training and recertification programmes, targeted public education campaigns, and routine highway safety checks. Mohammed urged other transport operators to emulate Dangote by opening their operations to safety audits and collaborating with the corps on training initiatives.
The move comes amid heightened public concern following a tragic incident last month involving a Dangote truck, which resulted in the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija winner Phyna. Ruth, a young mother and recent graduate, was critically injured in an August 13 crash near Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, leading to the amputation of one of her limbs before she passed away.
