From p0rn to policy making: Ex-adult film star named equality minister by president

Juan Carlos Florian
The Colombian government has officially appointed Juan Carlos Florian, a former pornographic actor and prominent LGBTQ+ rights activist, as the country’s new Minister of Equality.
Florian, who previously worked in adult entertainment and as a sex worker, will now be responsible for coordinating programs aimed at improving access to social services for vulnerable and marginalized populations across Colombia.
His appointment, confirmed on Friday by a government official via AFP, has sparked both praise and controversy. Supporters applaud the decision as a step forward for diversity and inclusion in leadership. However, critics — particularly from conservative and religious sectors — have voiced opposition, citing concerns over societal values.
Florian brings prior experience to the role, having served in a junior ministerial position and worked alongside international human rights organizations focused on social equity and justice.
President Gustavo Petro’s administration, which has seen over 50 cabinet reshuffles since taking office, has described Florian’s selection as part of its broader push for representation and reform.
