Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has debunked the widespread belief that footballers are extremely wealthy, revealing that many players struggle financially despite the perception of glamour and riches, republican.com.ng reports.

Speaking on The Culture League podcast alongside his Super Eagles teammate Frank Onyeka and actress Jemima Osunde, the Bayer Leverkusen forward explained that footballers carry heavy financial responsibilities, often supporting family members, friends, and even fans.

“A lot of people think we’re rich, but there’s no money in football. Let me explain,” Boniface said.

He pointed out that unlike other careers, football has a short active window, which limits the time players have to earn money.

“In the film industry, you can be successful at 35 or even 40. But in football, once you hit 35, your career is practically over—and then real life begins.”

Jemima Osunde responded, noting that footballers usually start earning early, but Boniface quickly clarified that early success isn’t guaranteed.

“Yes, we start early, but if you haven’t made it by 25 or 26, it’s difficult. In other careers, people can still break through later in life.”

When Osunde suggested that five years of well-paid football could set someone up for life, Boniface disagreed.

“That’s a wrong assumption. You end up spending a lot. You support family, friends, and even strangers. When you travel, you need money for tips and other expenses.”

Boniface’s candid remarks highlight the financial pressures many professional footballers face, challenging the popular belief that their careers are all about wealth and luxury.
