The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will be fully restored following the recent nationwide drop caused by a temporary shortfall in power generation. Officials expect normal supply to resume within 24 to 48 hours.
Adelabu spoke during a meeting with key power sector stakeholders, including the National Independent System Operator (NISO), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), generation companies (GENCOs), and distribution companies (DISCOs).
He stressed the urgency of restoring gas supply and boosting power generation, particularly during the high-demand Yuletide season.
The supply disruption followed an explosion on the Escravos-Lagos Gas Pipeline (ELP) and acts of vandalism on critical gas infrastructure, which affected gas delivery to several thermal power plants.
NISO confirmed that the incident caused a significant drop in electricity generation but noted that restoration work is nearly complete.
Minister Adelabu explained that preliminary investigations indicate pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta contributed to the gas shortage.
He reassured Nigerians that the Federal Government is working around the clock to resolve the issue.
“We understand the frustration this has caused Nigerians. The disruption is temporary, and we are committed to restoring normal electricity supply,” he said.
The Minister also highlighted long-term plans to diversify Nigeria’s energy mix, strengthen the national grid, and deploy advanced surveillance to protect critical infrastructure.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around power and gas facilities.
Adelabu concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering stable, reliable, and sustainable electricity nationwide, emphasizing that this temporary setback would not derail those objectives.
