FCT teachers call off over three-month strike, resume classes July 9

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have officially suspended their strike after more than three months of industrial action, with a directive for immediate resumption of academic activities on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT chapter, made the announcement in a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The union said the decision followed the payment of the new minimum wage and five months’ arrears to primary school teachers across the territory on July 8.

“All primary school teachers in the FCT are to resume duty on Wednesday,” the statement read.

The prolonged strike, which began in March, had crippled learning in public primary schools across the six area councils of the FCT.

According to the union, the resolution to suspend the strike came after the intervention of the FCT Minister, who convened stakeholders’ meetings to resolve the wage impasse.

As part of the negotiated settlement, the government disbursed N16 billion from the Area Councils’ share of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to settle the wage arrears and meet part of the teachers’ demands.

The NUT also disclosed plans for the formation of a special committee within two weeks to address remaining entitlements and create a roadmap for sustainable funding of teachers’ salaries.

However, the union warned that it would not hesitate to resume the strike if the government defaults on the new agreement.

The union expressed appreciation to FCT teachers for their resilience and extended gratitude to traditional rulers, civil society groups, and other supporters who stood by them during the industrial action.
