Arsenal grind out 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford
Arsenal began their Premier League title push with a gritty 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Riccardo Calafiori struck the only goal in the 13th minute, heading into an empty net after United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to deal with Declan Rice’s corner.
The error proved costly as the hosts’ expensively rebuilt attack failed to respond.
United, who spent £200 million on new forwards Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, showed promise but lacked a clinical edge.
Cunha and Mbeumo unsettled Arsenal’s defence early, Dorgu hit the post, and Sesko drew a strong save from David Raya, yet none could find the breakthrough.
Arsenal also struggled to click in attack, with debutant Viktor Gyokeres quiet before being replaced by Kai Havertz.
But Mikel Arteta’s men relied on defensive organisation and Raya’s heroics to protect their narrow lead and secure three valuable points.
The result keeps Arsenal in step with Liverpool and Manchester City, who also began the season with victories, as the Gunners aim to end their 21-year wait for a league title.
