Emir of Zuru, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami passes away
The Emir of Zuru in Kebbi State, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Sani Sami, has died at the age of 81.
He passed away on Saturday night in a London hospital after a brief illness, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, on Sunday.
Confirming the incident, the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Garba Umar-Dutsinmari, said the traditional ruler is survived by four wives and seven children.
He described the death as a huge loss to Zuru Emirate and Kebbi State.
“The Kebbi Government extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, the Zuru Emirate Council, and the people of Kebbi. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” he said, adding that burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
Born on December 10, 1943, the late Emir had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army. He enlisted in 1962, trained at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot, England, and was commissioned in 1963.
He rose to the rank of Major General, serving as Military Administrator of Bauchi State between 1984 and 1985, and later as General Officer Commanding 1st Mechanised Division in 1988.
Sani Sami was appointed Emir of Zuru in 1995 and remained on the throne until his death.
