Electricity workers suspend strike after FG’s intervention

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has suspended its strike following the intervention of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
The decision was contained in a Memorandum of Understanding signed on Thursday by NUEE, the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Ministry of Power.
The development followed a meeting between representatives of the ministry, TCN, and the unions. Adelabu was represented by the ministry’s Director of Distribution Services and Director of Planning, Research and Statistics.
According to the MoU, TCN and the Nigeria Integrated System Operator (NISO) will evaluate the financial implications of a committee report and prepare an implementation plan to be discussed with the unions. The review is expected to be considered by October 6–7, 2025.
The agreement also directed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to fast-track tariff reviews for TCN and NISO to aid the implementation process. It further assured that no employee would face victimisation for participating in the strike.
With the resolutions in place, the unions agreed to suspend their action to allow for implementation.
NUEE had earlier declared the strike in a notice dated Wednesday, raising fears of a nationwide blackout. However, the Nigerian Consumer Protection Network clarified that the outage experienced in parts of Abuja was due to a distribution company’s operational challenge, not a national grid collapse.
