Diesel suspected in Ibadan well, Police launch investigation
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the discovery of a substance suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), commonly called diesel, in a well at Omikunle, Yemetu area of Ibadan.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 6, at about 6:50 p.m., when the Yemetu Police Division received a report from residents. A team led by the Divisional Police Officer quickly visited the site to verify the claim.
According to the Command, the officers found the well contaminated with a petroleum-like liquid believed to be diesel. Several residents had already gathered with containers, apparently attempting to fetch the substance.
To forestall danger, the police secured the area with armed personnel and members of the neighbourhood watch. The Oyo State Ministry of Environment was also notified to handle the safe evacuation and disposal of the hazardous material.
Preliminary investigation suggested the contamination may have resulted from leakage in a nearby underground storage tank.
The police stressed that the situation is under control and assured residents of their safety, while investigations continue. The Command also urged the public to avoid contact with the substance and to promptly report any suspicious activity.
