Details emerge from Jonathan, Peter Obi closed-door meeting

Fresh details have emerged about the recent closed-door meeting between former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to reports, the two leaders met on Thursday to discuss possible strategies for building a united front in the forthcoming presidential race.

Obi later hinted at the discussions through updates shared on his Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko, confirmed the meeting in a statement on Friday, noting that Jonathan and Obi have maintained a cordial relationship for years.

“The meeting was for them to fraternise and deliberate on how to rescue Nigeria. They have always been friends,” Tanko said.

While commending Jonathan’s role as a respected statesman, Tanko urged him to continue playing a supportive role rather than being dragged into partisan plots.

“For us in the Obidient Movement, Jonathan has done his best as President and remains respected. This is the time for him to support his brother,” he stressed.

Tanko also alleged that some politicians were scheming to use Jonathan against Obi but insisted such moves would not succeed.

“Many Nigerians believe the next president should come from the South, and for fairness, the South-East deserves the chance. Peter Obi is the ideal candidate,” he added.

The meeting is said to be a continuation of earlier engagements between Jonathan and Obi as conversations around alliances and zoning gather momentum in the build-up to 2027.
