United States President Donald Trump has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the shooting death of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, following a nationwide manhunt.
Speaking during an interview with Fox News, Trump said the suspect was turned in by someone close to him, and expressed hope that the alleged killer would face the death penalty if convicted.
“It is still unclear whether the suspect acted alone or was part of a larger group,” Trump noted.
Federal authorities disclosed that investigators pursued more than 7,000 leads before making the arrest. However, officials have not released the suspect’s identity or provided details on a possible motive.
“I can tell you it was a targeted event,” said Robert Bohls, the top FBI agent in Salt Lake City.
An unnamed source told Reuters the suspect is currently being held in the custody of Utah State Law Enforcement.
