Burial programme released for late Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai

The family of late Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, popularly known as Dodo Mayana, has announced his burial arrangements.

Rufai passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 61, in a Lagos hospital after battling a long-term illness.

A programme released on Monday by veteran sports journalist, Mumini Alao, and signed by Sunny Bruce Rufai on behalf of the family, stated that the funeral rites will begin on Thursday, August 21, with a service of songs and the public presentation of his biography in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

This will be followed by a funeral Mass on Friday, August 22, at the Catholic Church of Visitation, First Avenue, Festac Town, beginning at 10:00 a.m.. Interment will take place immediately afterward at the Ikoyi Cemetery.

The ceremonies will conclude with a Thanksgiving service on Sunday, August 24, at the Catholic Church of Visitation, Festac Town.

Rufai was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments, playing a crucial role in helping the Super Eagles reach the Round of 16 on both occasions.

He also enjoyed a decorated career at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), winning silver medals in 1984 and 1988 before clinching the trophy with Nigeria in 1994.

Having made his international debut in 1981, Rufai represented Nigeria for more than 14 years and also played club football in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. After retirement, he remained committed to football development, mentoring young players and serving briefly as coordinator of Nigeria’s U23 national team.

Rufai’s burial is expected to attract top figures from the football community, alongside friends, fans, and dignitaries, who will gather to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Nigeria’s greatest goalkeepers.
