Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered a major collapse on Wednesday, plunging much of the country into darkness.

Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO) revealed that power generation plummeted from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to a mere 1.5MW between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a statement on X, noting that the outage was caused by a grid failure recorded at 11:23 a.m.

“The power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” AEDC said.
