BREAKING: Manchester United sack Amorim

Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim after just over a year in charge amid increasing tensions with the club’s senior leadership.

The Portuguese coach leaves Old Trafford after 14 months, with his final match being Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw away at Leeds United, a result that left United sitting sixth in the table.

Amorim was informed of the decision during a meeting on Monday morning with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

In a club statement, United said the decision was taken reluctantly but insisted a change was necessary to maximise their chances of achieving the best possible league finish this season.

Relations between Amorim and the club hierarchy had reportedly deteriorated in recent weeks, particularly after his public remarks following the Leeds match, where he stressed he was appointed as Manchester United’s manager rather than merely a coach.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss had also earlier expressed frustration over a lack of transfer backing, suggesting the club was unwilling to provide the funds and time needed to fully implement his tactical system.

Former United midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher has been named interim head coach and will take charge of Wednesday night’s Premier League fixture away at Burnley.

Manchester United now turn their attention to appointing a permanent successor, with key domestic fixtures approaching in both the Premier League and the FA Cup.
