The ongoing leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a new turn on Wednesday as Nafiu Bala formally assumed office as the party’s National Chairman.

Speaking to the press, Bala described himself as the authentic National Chairman, citing the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution as the basis for his succession following the resignation of Ralph Nwosu.

Nwosu had stepped down after the opposition coalition adopted ADC earlier this year. Following his resignation, David Mark was appointed as Interim National Chairman.

Bala, who previously served as Deputy National Chairman, accused coalition leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, of attempting to hijack the party.

He stated: “As our party’s National leadership, we are not aware of any change of leadership. Our former National Chairman voluntarily resigned, and the party’s constitution clearly outlines the transfer of power.

“According to both the Electoral Act and our constitution, the Deputy National Chairman assumes leadership upon the resignation of the National Chairman. I now resume office as the authentic National Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress.”
