BREAKING: FG shuts schools over insecurity
The Federal Government on Friday ordered the immediate closure of 41 unity colleges across the country following a resurgence in the abduction of students in several states.
The directive was issued in a statement signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, who spoke on behalf of the Minister of Education. She said the action was taken to avert potential security breaches in the affected institutions.
Principals of the listed colleges were instructed to commence full compliance without delay, including the evacuation and safe return of students to their families.
According to the circular, the schools marked for closure include FGGC Minjibir, FTC Ganduje, FGGC Zaria, FTC Kafanchan, FTC Dayi, FGC Daura, FGGC Tambuwal, FSC Sokoto, FTC Wurno, FGC Gusau, FGC Anka, FGGC Gwandu and FGC Birnin Yauri.
Others are FTC Zuru, FGGC Kazaure, FGC Kiyawa, FTC Hadejia, FGGC Bida, FGC New-Bussa, FTC Kuta-Shiroro, FGA Suleja, FGC Ilorin, FGGC Omu-Aran, FTC Gwanara, FGGC Bakori, FGC Ugwolawo, FGGC Kabba, FTC Ogugu, FGGC Bwari, FGC Rubochi, FGGC Abaji and FGGC Potiskum.
Also affected are FGC Buni Yadi, FTC Gashua, FTC Michika, FGC Ganye, FGC Azare, FTC Misau, FGGC Bajoga, FGC Billiri and FTC Zambuk.
A review of the list shows that the majority of the affected schools are located in the North-West, North-East and North-Central regions—zones that have recorded repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years.
The directive follows fresh incidents where students were abducted in Kebbi and, most recently, Niger State, prompting increased concerns over school safety and the urgent need for protective measures across federal institutions.
