The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has suspended its nationwide strike following mediation by the federal government in its standoff with the Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Company.

PENGASSAN President, Comrade Festus Osifo, announced the decision in Abuja on Wednesday, explaining that the union acted out of respect for national institutions and the government’s intervention.

He, however, expressed concerns about the refinery’s commitment to the agreement, warning that the union would immediately resume the industrial action without notice if any terms were breached.

Negotiations between the union, Dangote Group and government officials began on Monday but stalled after management rejected demands to recall sacked workers.

A compromise was eventually reached in the early hours of Tuesday after the intervention of top officials, including the National Security Adviser, the Director-General of the DSS, the Ministers of Labour and Finance, and senior Petroleum Ministry representatives.
