BREAKING: APC secures majority in Rivers LG elections
APC flag
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged as the dominant force in the just-concluded Local Government Area (LGA) chairmanship elections in Rivers State, winning 20 out of the 23 councils contested.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), led by its Chairman, Dr. Michael Odey, announced the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters along Aba Road, Port Harcourt.
According to the official declaration, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to secure only three LGAs—Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City (PHALGA), and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA).
Notably, Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s home LGA, Opobo-Nkoro, fell to the APC, marking one of the most significant upsets of the polls.
A Major Political Shift
The outcome signals a dramatic change in the political balance of Rivers State, which has long been a stronghold of the PDP. With the APC now controlling the majority of LGAs, the party is positioned to wield significant influence at the grassroots level.
Political analysts believe the results reflect the deepening rivalry between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, whose loyalists dominated the APC candidates fielded in the elections.

Implications Going Forward
With APC taking charge of 20 LGAs, the party has consolidated its grip on grassroots governance in Rivers, giving it a stronger foothold ahead of future state and national elections.
Meanwhile, PDP’s victory in three key LGAs—including Port Harcourt City and Obio-Akpor, which are heavily populated urban centers—shows the ruling party still retains influence in strategic areas of the state.
The results are already stirring heated debates in the political landscape of Rivers, as observers await the reactions of Governor Fubara, the PDP leadership, and opposition figures.
