Besiktas sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after European setback

Turkish giants Besiktas have parted ways with former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following their early exit from European competition.

The 52-year-old Norwegian took over the Istanbul-based club in January, guiding them to a fourth-place finish in the Süper Lig last season.

However, Solskjaer’s tenure ended abruptly after Besiktas were defeated by Swiss side Lausanne in the Conference League play-off, confirming they would miss out on European football this season.

The club announced: “Our contract with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been terminated following a decision made at a board meeting.

Following the meeting, our chairman, Serdal Adalı, thanked Solskjaer for his services to date.”

Besiktas had also failed to progress past the Europa League qualifiers, losing to Shakhtar Donetsk earlier in the campaign.

The Turkish club is now reportedly eyeing Nuri Sahin, the former Borussia Dortmund player and manager, as a potential replacement for the managerial role.

This marks another high-profile exit for Solskjaer, who previously managed Manchester United, where he spent three years at the helm.

Besiktas will now look to regroup under new leadership ahead of the 2025/26 season, hoping to return to European competitions.
