Bandits attack Farmers in Kwara
Barely 24 hours after gunmen attacked a church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, another violent incident has been recorded, this time in Bokungi Village, Edu Local Government Area.
Armed men ambushed rice farmers working on their fields today, killing two and abducting four others. The attack occurred during peak harvest hours, as the farmers were gathering their produce.
A community source confirmed the incident, adding that full details were still being compiled. Residents said the gunmen operated for several minutes without resistance before fleeing the area.
Further findings revealed that the deceased were shot while attempting to resist the abduction. According to a community leader in Bokungi, the farmers were rounding off their day’s work around 6 p.m. when the assailants struck. Four farmers who were nearby were taken away, while three others tried to escape. Two were fatally shot, and one sustained injuries. The bodies of the deceased have since been buried.
Community members say rising insecurity in Edu Local Government Area has forced many farmers to desert their settlements, especially during the harvest season when they are most vulnerable.
Efforts to reach the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ojo Adekimi, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
