APC chieftain Sani Shinkafi escapes assassination attempt
Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governorship candidate in Zamfara State, on Friday escaped an assassination attempt in Abuja.
The incident occurred shortly after Juma’at prayers while Shinkafi was on his way home.
He narrated that a group of heavily armed, masked assailants dressed in black intercepted his convoy, blocked his vehicle, and launched an attack before speeding away in an unmarked black Prado Jeep.
In a statement released by the Patriots for the Advancement of Peace and Social Development, Shinkafi linked the attempt on his life to his outspoken positions on pressing national issues, particularly the security crisis in Zamfara State.
“This was an unprovoked attempt on my life,” he said. “But I will not be deterred by intimidation or harassment in the quest for national security, peace, unity, and social development.”
The APC stalwart disclosed that earlier in the week, his residence in Abuja had received multiple threat calls from unidentified numbers, which he now believes were connected to the attack.
He described the threats and the subsequent assault as a coordinated plot to silence his voice.
Shinkafi appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, to launch a thorough investigation into the matter. He urged security agencies to track down the attackers, expose their sponsors, and ensure justice is served.
The incident has heightened concerns over the safety of political figures and vocal critics of insecurity in the North-West region, especially in Zamfara, which has been plagued by years of banditry, kidnappings, and insurgent activities.
As of press time, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the DSS had issued an official statement on the attack.
