Alleged christian genocide: Again, FG speaks on US threat

The Federal Government has said it remains calm and not in panic mode over the recent position of the United States regarding alleged genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this while addressing journalists after Thursday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Idris explained that the government has opened channels of discussion with the U.S. authorities to address the concerns raised and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to protecting all citizens regardless of religion or ethnic background.

“The government of Nigeria is responding to the genuine concerns raised. Politics aside, we are taking these issues seriously,” the Minister said.

He stressed that the administration has always been committed to ensuring safety and religious freedom for all Nigerians, in line with the Constitution.

“The killing of even one Nigerian citizen is a concern to the government. Our Constitution guarantees the right of everyone to worship freely without hindrance, and we will continue to uphold that,” Idris added.

When asked if the U.S. position was affecting governance, Idris stated that the Tinubu administration remains stable and focused.

“The President is calm, the Federal Executive Council members are calm. Yes, there are security challenges, and yes, government is responding with the greatest sense of responsibility,” he said.

The Minister noted that Nigeria continues to work with both regional and international partners, including the United States, to address terrorism and violent extremism, citing the country’s porous borders as a key challenge.

He confirmed that diplomatic discussions are ongoing with the U.S., emphasizing that Nigeria prefers dialogue over public confrontation.

“There is no panic. We are responding responsibly and steadily, maintaining our dignity as a nation while ensuring the safety of all citizens,” Idris concluded.
