Alcaraz defeats Sinner to win second US Open title

Carlos Alcaraz clinched his second US Open crown on Sunday with a four-set victory over Jannik Sinner, as former U.S. President Donald Trump watched from the stands in New York.

The 22-year-old Spaniard prevailed 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to capture his sixth Grand Slam title, avenging his only major final defeat at Wimbledon in July against the Italian. The win also ends Sinner’s 27-match unbeaten run at hard-court Grand Slams.

With the triumph, Alcaraz will reclaim the world No. 1 ranking, returning to the top for the first time since September 2023.

“I tried my best today. I couldn’t do more,” said Sinner, who also fell to Alcaraz in an epic French Open final earlier this year.

Sinner’s loss continues a historic drought in New York, where no men’s player has successfully defended the title since Roger Federer’s five-year reign from 2004 to 2008.

Sunday’s clash marked the third consecutive Grand Slam final between Alcaraz and Sinner, underlining their dominance in the sport. The occasion drew added attention with Trump’s attendance, following his visits to February’s NFL Super Bowl and July’s FIFA Club World Cup final.
