Alaafin of Oyo urges traditional rulers to embrace unity for national development

The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has called on traditional rulers across Nigeria to strengthen unity among themselves, describing it as essential for national growth, stability, and resilience in challenging times.
The monarch made this known on Sunday while receiving a delegation of traditional rulers from Kwara State at his Boroboro residence in Oyo Town. According to a statement by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Oba Owoade emphasized that unity among royal fathers transcends cultural obligation—it is a strategic tool for progress.
“In difficult times, unity gives us strength and direction,” the Alaafin said. “When we stand together, we gain the courage to confront challenges. Just like fingers clapping together create a louder sound, our collective effort resonates more powerfully than isolated voices.”
Employing symbolic language, the monarch likened the diversity among traditional rulers to the fingers of a hand—each distinct yet capable of producing harmony when working together.
“Each finger has its unique rhythm, yet together, they form a harmonious sound,” he added. “Our different perspectives and talents must be seen as assets that enrich our collective journey.”
Oba Owoade also stressed that mutual collaboration among traditional rulers would enhance their capacity to influence public policy and preserve cultural heritage.
“When we support one another and celebrate each other’s wins, our collective success becomes louder and more impactful. A united front commands greater respect and positions us to be more effective contributors to national development.”
He further noted that many community-based challenges could be more easily addressed through cooperative leadership.
“What is difficult for one becomes easier for many. Unity breeds efficiency, purpose, and a shared sense of responsibility,” the Alaafin stated.
The visiting royal delegation from Kwara State included notable monarchs such as Oba Jimoh Adesoye Adebowale Adetona I (Elerin of Erin-Ile), Oba Abubakar Oloyede (Onigbonna of Igbonna), Oba Dr. Olarewaju Ganiyu Toyin (Oninaja of Inaja Alaro), and Oba Abdulrazaq Adegboyega Afolabi (Olojoku of Ojoku Kingdom), among others.
The meeting symbolized deepening ties among Yoruba royal institutions across state boundaries and reaffirmed the importance of solidarity in traditional leadership structures.
