Alaafin of Oyo needs no battle for supremacy, says palace

The Oyo Palace has reaffirmed that Alaafin Abimbola Akeem Owoade I holds unquestioned authority among Yoruba monarchs and does not need to contest supremacy with any other Oba, either within Yorubaland or beyond.

The palace described him as a custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition, committed to the welfare and security of his subjects.

The clarification comes amid tensions over the Okanlomo title recently conferred on Dotun Sanusi by the Ooni of Ife, a development that has sparked discussions on royal hierarchies. The palace emphasized that the Alaafin’s leadership and legacy remain firmly established.

In a statement signed by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, the monarch’s life was lauded as an example of steady progress and dedication. Citing Alexander Graham Bell, the statement highlighted that effective leaders advance step by step, focusing on practical achievements and the greater good.

The palace noted that Alaafin Owoade blends humility with royalty, balancing traditional obligations with contemporary governance demands. He has also been inducted into the mysteries of Yoruba deities, including Ifa and Sango, and is regarded as their direct representative on Earth.

The palace said Alaafin Owoade made a covenant at an ancient Yoruba shrine to protect and promote Yoruba norms and traditions.

The palace added that his administration relies heavily on the wishes and welfare of his subjects in both cultural and political matters.

Tracing Oyo’s history, the release noted that the city rose to prominence through trade, military prowess, and wealth. “During the colonial era, the British recognized the Alaafin’s authority, signing treaties with him as the superior head of the Yoruba nation, reinforcing his legitimate supremacy,” the statement said.

The palace also highlighted Oyo’s cultural and material heritage, including festivals, historical architecture, traditional crafts, and musical instruments, noting that these resources continue to shape governance, religion, and economic life. Alaafin Owoade’s administration has continued to nurture and preserve these legacies.

Concluding the statement, the palace reiterated that Alaafin Owoade commands respect and loyalty through his service to the people and dedication to Yoruba tradition. “The Alaafin’s leadership remains a beacon of continuity, culture, and stability for Yorubaland,” Durojaiye said.
