Alaafin launches free cataract surgery in Oyo

In a major health intervention aimed at combating avoidable blindness, His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, the Alaafin and Paramount Ruler of Oyo Kingdom, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has announced a free cataract surgery programme for residents of the ancient city and its environs.

The initiative, according to a statement signed by Bode Durojaiye, Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, will provide surgical operations for the first 100 patients diagnosed with cataracts who complete their registration.

Registration for the programme is already open, with interested persons directed to enlist at Shekinah Pharmacy and Stores, located in Adebimpe Building near Idi Ope, Oyo Town.

Cataracts, one of the leading causes of vision loss in Nigeria, can often be treated through surgery, but the cost remains a barrier for many. The Alaafin’s gesture is therefore expected to bring relief to dozens of families, particularly among the elderly and low-income earners.

“This project reflects His Imperial Majesty’s commitment to the well-being of his people and his determination to improve access to quality healthcare,” the statement read in part.

The free surgical outreach will not only restore sight to beneficiaries but also enhance productivity and quality of life, in line with global calls to reduce the burden of preventable blindness.
