Akwa Ibom House of Assembly denies plans to probe former Governor Udom Emmanuel

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has clarified that it has no intention to probe the immediate past Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, contrary to speculations circulating in some media outlets.

Deputy Speaker Kufreabasi Edidem, in a statement issued in Uyo on Tuesday, emphasized that the House has not established any committee to investigate the former governor.

“The leadership and members of the Akwa Ibom Assembly have taken note of a newspaper report dated Monday, August 11, which alleged that the immediate past governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, is facing a probe by the House,” Edidem said.

He categorically stated that “there is no truth whatsoever in this report, either in content or intent.” He further described the publication as speculative, lacking factual basis, and not representative of any official position or resolution by the House.

Edidem explained that the matter discussed during the plenary session on Thursday, August 7, concerned a Motion of Urgent Public Importance raised by the member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Mr. Uwem Imoh-Ita. The motion addressed the issue of unpaid salaries to some employees of the Coconut Plantation, who had not been paid for seven months.

“In accordance with House procedures, an ad hoc committee was constituted to investigate this specific issue and report back within one month. The committee has not yet submitted its findings for the House’s consideration,” the Deputy Speaker added.

The House of Assembly urged media organisations to verify their information from official legislative sources before publishing stories.

“Inaccurate and sensational reporting misleads the public and undermines the credibility of democratic institutions. Journalists should understand the ethical boundaries between factual reporting and sensationalism. Journalism is a noble profession grounded in strong ethics,” Edidem concluded.
