Akume denies interest in APC Chairmanship, says he remains focused on national assignment
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has denied reports linking him to the race for the National Chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as baseless and misleading.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, on Thursday, Akume said he remains fully committed to his national assignment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and has no intention of contesting for any party position.
“The attention of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has been drawn to a publication indicating that he is one of the top politicians jostling for the position of APC National Chairman,” the statement read. “This claim is entirely false and appears intended to distract the SGF from the crucial responsibilities assigned to him.”
The former Benue State governor reiterated that he is not lobbying for any role within the party, including the national chairmanship, and expressed his unwavering dedication to the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“I am not in a hurry to walk away from the national assignment given to me by Mr. President,” Akume said. “I believe strongly that whatever is destined for an individual will come to pass at the right time. I am not part of any contest.”
Akume acknowledged that the North-Central zone has competent leaders who can serve in any capacity if given the opportunity but emphasized that his current priority is national progress, not internal party politics.
“Whatever I have become today is through God’s grace and the support of people like President Tinubu. My focus is to ensure Nigerians enjoy the real dividends of democracy,” he added.
He also called on the media to uphold professionalism by verifying political claims before publication, warning that unfounded reports could unnecessarily inflame public discourse.
Odunuga concluded by encouraging journalists to seek accurate information through proper channels, including the SGF’s office, to avoid the spread of misinformation and maintain public trust.
