Akpabio returns to Nigeria, quells health speculations

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has returned to Nigeria after a brief stay in London, ending weeks of speculation about his health.

Mr. Akpabio arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday.

He was received at the Presidential Wing by a delegation of senators, aides, and supporters who welcomed him back.

His media office clarified that the trip was a short vacation following his participation at the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament held in Geneva, Switzerland, from July 29 to 31.

His absence from public view after the event had fuelled widespread rumours on social media that he was hospitalised in London.

Speaking to journalists shortly after his arrival, the Senate President dismissed the speculation and reassured Nigerians of his readiness to drive “robust legislative engagements” when the National Assembly reconvenes.

He added that Nigeria’s strong presence at the Geneva conference was a deliberate move to strengthen democratic governance and foster closer ties with other legislatures across the world.

At 62, Akpabio is no stranger to the spotlight. A former governor of Akwa Ibom State and ex-Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, he was elected President of the 10th Senate in June 2023.

His recent absence had raised political chatter, with critics questioning his capacity, but his return is expected to put the matter to rest.

With the Senate due to resume soon, attention now shifts to how Akpabio will steer the chamber through pressing national issues, including economic reforms, security challenges, and legislative-executive relations.
