AfroBasket 2025: You're doing well – Tinubu tells D’Tigress

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for securing a spot in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship for the fifth consecutive time.

In a statement released on Sunday by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the team for their resilience, dominance, and consistent performance throughout the tournament.

Recall that D’Tigress defeated Senegal 75-68 in a tense semi-final clash on Saturday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The win marked their seventh consecutive victory over the Senegalese team, underscoring their dominance in African women’s basketball.

President Tinubu hailed the game as “the final before the final,” praising the Nigerian players for their determination and fighting spirit. He also highlighted their unwavering discipline, focus, and unity as qualities that have continued to bring honour to the nation.

“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament,” Tinubu said. “These are qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide.”

The President gave special recognition to Rena Wakama, the team’s first female Head Coach, applauding her leadership and the inspiration she has brought to the squad. Wakama, a former player, has now led the team from the sidelines with remarkable impact.
