The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has warned Christians not to prioritize material wealth over their spiritual lives, describing the act as misguided and spiritually dangerous.

Speaking during the church’s 73rd Annual Convention, themed “The Overcomers,” Adeboye urged believers to focus on nurturing their souls rather than indulging the body, which he reminded the congregation will ultimately perish.

“God is not against enjoyment,” he said. “But the body you pamper, polish, and make up will one day return to dust. What truly matters is your spirit — that’s what goes to heaven.”

The cleric further stressed that while God allows prosperity, seeking riches through dishonest means such as lying or cheating contradicts the Christian calling. “Chasing wealth at the expense of your soul is foolishness. What will become of all you’ve acquired when you die?” he asked.

Adeboye described the life of an overcomer as one of spiritual discipline, sacrifice, and resistance to worldly distractions. “To become a champion, you need discipline. To remain one, you need even more — because someone is always after your crown.”

He encouraged believers to stand firm in their faith, reminding them that though life is filled with battles, victory is possible through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.

As part of the ongoing convention activities, RCCG ordained a total of 15,831 ministers, including 10,343 deacons and deaconesses and 5,488 assistant pastors. The ordination ceremonies included the laying on of hands and, for assistant pastors, anointing with oil.

In a sermon titled “Chosen for a Purpose,” Pastor Joseph Olaiya, President of the Living Faith Foundation, urged the newly ordained ministers to focus on evangelism and remain resilient in the face of challenges. “You were chosen to bear fruit,” he said. “Desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit — they’ll strengthen your work.”
