REPUBLICAN NIGERIA gathered that the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has approved the elevation of 57 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The decision was made during the Committee’s 169th plenary session held in Abuja on Thursday.

The SAN title is a mark of distinction awarded to lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional excellence in advocacy or contributed significantly to legal scholarship in Nigeria.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary to the LPPC, Mr. Kabir Akanbi, the Committee considered three petitions filed against some applicants. “After careful review, the petitions were found to be without merit and accordingly dismissed,” the statement said.

All successful applicants are required to attend and complete the mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme, in line with directives from the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), before their formal conferment.

The LPPC also cautioned the successful candidates against placing advertisements or receiving public congratulatory messages, noting that any violation of this rule may attract sanctions. This warning is grounded in Paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and Rule 39(3) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023.

The swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed SANs is scheduled for September 29.
