2027: Don’t doubt me, my one-term vow sacrosanct – Peter Obi insists

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serving only one term of four years if elected President in 2027.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the former Anambra State governor emphasized that his promise remains firm and non-negotiable.

“My one-term, four-year vow is sacrosanct,” Obi declared, stressing that he would not renege on the pledge, despite skepticism from some quarters.

Obi said critics of his vow were projecting their own values onto him, adding that his political record proves otherwise.

“They are judging me by their own standards — where political promises are made to be broken. But they forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth,” he said.

Citing examples from history, Obi referenced former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and South Africa’s Nelson Mandela, both of whom left enduring legacies despite serving short tenures.

“Mandela chose to serve only one term, despite immense public pressure to stay longer. His decision was a deliberate act of leadership, a statement that power must serve the people, not the self,” Obi noted.

He added that his one-term commitment is grounded in his belief that effective leadership does not require a prolonged stay in office.

“My vow is a solemn commitment, rooted in my conviction that purposeful, transparent leadership does not require an eternity,” he said.
