Nigeria’s qualification hopes for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered another blow on Friday after South Africa defeated Lesotho 3-0 in Johannesburg.

Bafana Bafana, who entered the encounter at the top of the group standings, strengthened their position with a commanding display.

Mohau Nkota put the hosts ahead in the 15th minute with a composed finish.

After a dominant first-half performance, South Africa doubled their lead in the 63rd minute through Lyle Foster. Just four minutes later, Oswin Appollis struck to seal the victory and underline their superiority.

The result takes Hugo Broos’ men to 16 points from seven matches, opening a five-point gap over second-placed Benin Republic, who are level on 11 points. Rwanda trail in third with eight points.

Nigeria, meanwhile, remain in fourth place on seven points and face Rwanda on Saturday evening in a must-win clash to revive their dwindling qualification hopes.
