2026 World Cup qualifier: Controversial Bassey goal not enough as Super Eagles share points with South Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

An own goal by captain William Troost-Ekong in the 25th minute gave the South African the lead, silencing the Nigerian fans.

Relief came just before halftime when defender Calvin Bassey found the equaliser, though the goal quickly became a subject of controversy.
